The challenge

Our client needed to manage the cookie banners across its 250 websites to ensure compliance most with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). To address this, we have initiated the standardization of our cookie management framework by developing a uniform template to be implemented across all websites. These websites span different levels, including corporate, brand, and local product sites. Additionally, there's a need to address the inconsistent use of cookies across these sites.

 The Solution & The Benefits

To ensure our client’s compliance with GDPR and other privacy regulations, we developed and centrally implemented a comprehensive set of Golden Rules for cookie banners, standardizing content and consent behavior across all websites.

This approach enabled consistent cookie management and ensured a unified strategy for safeguarding user privacy.

Each website implemented a structured process for cookie banner setup, which involved:

  1. Cookie Scanning and Categorization: Organizing cookies into specific categories.
  2. Template and Styling Customization: Designing and personalizing the consent banner, preference center, and cookie list.
  3. Script Integration: Developing scripts to connect the website with the consent management platform.
  4. Cookie Blocking: Ensuring non-essential cookies were blocked until the user gave explicit consent.                  

The project started with a cookie scan and categorization, followed by the tailored configuration of cookie banners to meet the specific requirements of each website. These configurations incorporated detailed templates, styling adjustments, script injections, and the application of cookie-blocking measures for non-essential cookies until user consent was granted.                

Leveraging the OneTrust platform, we operationalized the entire cookie compliance process. This included identifying hidden cookies, creating and optimizing consent banners, and ensuring seamless integration with key technologies such as Google Tag Manager, source code, and floodlights/iframes.                                                                                                  

We collaborated closely with creative digital agencies to ensure alignment of web content, while coordinating with the global media agency to optimize the use of Google Tag Manager.                                                                

To drive long-term success, we provided comprehensive training to the client's teams and partner agencies, ensuring consistent implementation and adherence to the Golden Rules across all websites.
